After their crass kiddie glitch pop first release, Gorillaz have taken the challenge of a difficult second album and proved that they are more than just monkeys. Far from being another ill-fitting creation of illustrator Jamie Hewlett and Blur front man Damon Albarn, it's a cohesive, sophisticated, grooving sci-fi beast with a depth that far surpasses any of their previous hopes or attempts. This album is a cinematic masterpiece that builds up only to be stripped back down to its most beautiful and chilling elements. Guest spots from De La Soul, Shaun Ryder, Roots Manuva and even Dennis Hopper doing some creepy spoken word all add to the panoramic feel and highlight the breadth of influences and ideas.
Cartoons may be for kids, but behind the sketches are dark, innovative musicians that have made an incredible album that plays from start to finish only to beg you to play it through once more...
