Never sure how to tell your Merzbow from your Masona, your Jandek from your Scott Walker, or understood why John Zorn is a big deal? Don't have a clue who any of these people are?

Sound art, drone, noise, improvisation, avant-garde: confusing terms that can baffle us regular folk and leave us asking, ‘Will it be one of those wrist-slitty gigs again?'

As with any conundrum, it's best to turn to a professional. In 21:100:100, GCAS and Melbourne art and sound identities Oren Ambachi and Marco Fusinato offer the perfect guide to help weave a cohesive web through this oft-impenetrable world. Suspended from the ceiling of the gallery, 100 sets of headphones will present the work of 100 of the most important purveyors of sound from Australia and around the world in the 21st century.

21:100:100 will be a musical Melways of smashed glass, a mess of circuits, scientific experiments, isolated black metal, hippies in nature, and sheer volume.

The curators will be taking it to the people in a companion performance at BMW Edge. Starring the guitar and piano meanderings of Brendan Walls and James Rushford, the performance features the added bonus of Robin Fox's synaesthesia-inducing laser show.
