Zaishu box-chairs
Zaishu is derived from the Japanese word 'zaisu' meaning small seat. Inspired by a 16th century nomadic Samurai the Zaishu is the little chair with a big heart. For those involved in their creation, the Zaishu is a project as opposed to a product and represents ideas of participation, creativity, sustainability and evolution.
No two Zaishu chairs are the same and the artwork on each chair serves as a sort of urban artefact with each seat being a visual documentation for a particular time and place. Eight months since it's inception, there are now over 800 artists and designers participating in Australia, Japan, Korea and Italy.
The Zaishu can also double as a table or a storage box and can be assembled sans nails, screws, tools or glue. Made from plywood the Zaishu is a precious object made from non-precious materials, with its unique design and timeless design, the Zaishu resists obsolescence in a way that other furniture can't.
