People aren't wearing enough hats. Before Dr Follicles started offering rockabilly quiffs for a strawberry and handful of change, hats played a vital role in society. In the '50s, William S had short-brimmed felt strewn across his junk-slimmed face, masking his identity as he 'grifted' homeless in New York subways. In the '70s, the mad men of advertising wore a fedora below the brow to conceal wild eyes, ideas and concaved nostrils. In 2009, I wear a Panama to hide the shame of drinking cleanskins on my balcony, and to cover the next morning's bloodshot eye from the leggy receptionist.

Marie Antoinette once ruminated that "for every occasion there is a hat, for every person there's an occasion." You'll never find that quote on the internet, just like some of the hats in the Smart Alec range. There's felt, straw; wide, short, flat; vintage and new. This Smith Street store is a utopia for balding accountants, jazz players and fashion-savvy ex-fixed riders. The best part is with a hat like mine you can make up quotes, go off on tangents and start up a Dollarmite account with the change you made on Johnston Street singing Pete Murray. Not enough hats, too much tram.
