They called him The Orange Bag Bandit, and circa '89 he left Camberwell residents baffled holding up the local Tuckerbag with his thieving identity concealed by a netted plastic orange bag.
Whether or not Melbourne based designer Emma Davies' polypropylene (orange and onion bag) sculptural works were inspired by the incident remains as mysterious as the bandits' identity, and more importantly, his decision to use an orange bag rather than, say, a balaclava.
In Davies' work (thankfully non-orange) polypropylene netting is moulded around bottles, bowls and other man made objects, disguising the original appearance of the material, and metamorphosing something quite banal into something distinctly beautiful.
The combination of colour, texture and peculiar form make Davies' work truly unique, activating our imagination and enticing our curiosity with no harm done to middle suburbia supermarkets.
