The only bad thing about the Fitzroy Pool is that there really aren't too many decent cafes within walking distance where you can grab breakfast before stretching out on the pool wall and thumbing your nose at the Anti-Cancer Council. Ici (on Gore Street) is OK but usually packed to the brim and there are too many architectural haircuts. Rosamond and Cavallero are fine if you don't mind a schlep to the pool on foot, but on a hot summer day Smith Street blows.

The largely undiscovered alternative is The Shire. It's half a block off Brunswick Street, kind of around the corner from Dangerfield. Look for an orange and green building and it's on the ground floor. Now this ain't no hipster paradise (which can be good when you are feeling vulnerable in your bathers) and thankfully it isn't your typical Brunswick Street Class A ‘alternative café either, where everyone has an eyebrow piercing - it's a straight forward café with a good breakfast ciabatta roll and decent coffee for the morning and a good shaded stop off for a drink on the way home at night.
