The house PA quietly lays down The Books, a smooth surface for the clinking of balls and the murmuring of punters. The room, at the top of a creaky firetrap staircase, fits 17 full-size snooker tables and is so large that pre smoking ban, it was impossible to see from one side to the other.
You can't imagine how much smoke and testosterone filled the cavernous, high-vaulted darkness of the Red Triangle on that evening, back in 1981, when three-times world champ Robby Foldvari took on eight-times Aussie titleist George Ganim Jr. in a packed and silent room. The atmosphere was tensely contracted around the single patch of light spilling onto the luxurious expanse of specially curated felt that is Table 13.
Billiards is a game for serious tragics - three balls on a full-size table, the length of the game subject only to the players' desire to keep playing. Most people play snooker or pool, but occasionally some potbellied rocker with a satori glint in his eye wanders in around 4am and stays until closing. Tino, the owner, reminds me to tell you, "Because of the ‘in-off' scoring option, ball control can be perfected after much solo practice. And it's special rates for members."
