A little-known fact about ThreeThousand's editor is her pathological hatred of chickens, "alive or dead". I, on the other hand, love the little bastards - especially fried or roasted. When in Sydney, I make a pilgrimage to Clem's Chicken Shop, and if the Aussie dollar would stop crapping its pants, I would definitely dine at alluringly named Hell's Kitchen eatery, Piece Of Chicken.
So I was thrilled to learn there's a new charcoal chicken joint in North Fitzroy. Once a humble poultry shop, it now also sells takeaway roasted organic chooks, chicken rolls and burgers. Plus all the trimmings: roast vegies, salads, chips, potato cakes, nuggets, and pineapple and banana fritters for "Hawaiian packs".
Good news for chip fans, too. While the anaemic gravy's clearly made from powder, the chips are delicious: crunchy, well seasoned and vegetarian ("The chicken salt isn't actually made from chickens," winked the jaunty serving lady). And the servings are monstrous: a "small" is a cardboard box the size of a Bryce Courtenay novel.
But be warned! While harassed bourgies drop in after work for their roast dinners, Super Tasty Rooster isn't a late-night takeaway. If you're not there before 8pm, the chooks will have flown the coop.
