What:
Rancho Deluxe
Where:
34 Budd St, Collingwood
When:
Sat 9am-2pm for coffee, weekdays if you've got a 1930s Ford that needs some work.
Ben from Rancho Deluxe is into 1930s Fords, and he seems to really know what he's doing. He set up Rancho Deluxe as a workshop for his own and other people's cars. You'd recognise a 1930s Ford if you saw it, even if you don't know anything about cars. They're the classic Hot Rod with the chopped-off teardrop shaped body, a bit like a boat with wheels strapped to the side, often with the engine exposed and flames painted down the sides.
The great thing about what Ben is doing is that he's not bound by historical accuracy or a specific stylistic tic. He's not making cars that have to be factory spec from the ‘30s, or cars that look like they should exist only on set at the Baz Luhrman remake of American Graffiti. Ben is essentially making new cars with old parts, or with new parts that he makes himself. They have the feel of a bespoke suit, everything thought of and in the right place, with evidence of the hand of the maker. The opposite of the recent rash of nostalgic remakes, epitomised by this.
For a peek into Rancho Deluxe, drop down on Saturdays for coffee.
