What:
Pumpkin Carving
Where:
Your place. Also there will be a Jack-O-Lantern competition at Bar Etiquette this Friday night, 408 Sydney Rd, Brunswick. (Pre-carved entries only.)
When:
Fri Oct 31
Inside every pumpkin is an amusing Jack-O-Lantern waiting to be set free. That and a lot of slimy seed pulp. I won't lie, pumpkin carving is a messy and potentially dangerous thing to do. But, as an enduring symbol of man's knack for finding mirth in dark and scary times, the hollowed out pumpkin with a candle stuck in it is hard to beat.
Directions:
1. Procure a decent size pumpkin. With a sharp kitchen knife, cut the head off a friend or acquaintance. Discard the body.
2. Carefully remove the face and stretch it over your pumpkin. You now have a basic stencil.
3. Smear a sticky condiment like jam or peanut butter onto the pumpkin through the stencil's mouth, nose and eye holes. Inspect your work. If you're happy with the layout, it's time for the rats.
4. Set the pumpkin in a dark alley (Croft, Caledonian Lane, there are plenty) and leave it until the rats have gnawed in through the jammy bits and eaten out the flesh and pulp. Depending on the alley, this should take between 8 and 12 minutes.
5. Grab a candle: this bad boy is done. Gather your remaining friends and yuk it up to the tune of your favourite Halloween recording artists.
