You might have ridden past it a few hundred times and wondered,"What's so ol school about this place?" Well, I'll tell you. Tastes like real potato, that's what. They make their own chips, that's why. Cut them straight from the potato. They have sold a tonne of these chips since they opened 2.5 weeks ago. An actual tonne. Like, 100 kilos a day or some such. I don't want to be too extreme about this, but these characters are actually the fastest potato peeler-choppers in the world.
Furthermore, they are providing a service to the marginalised underground community of North Fitzroy who don't want to eat organic tofu bean chard sprout soup for dinner. The people who want to order their food under fluorescent lights, get a can of Kirks creamy soda to go with it, read a motorbike magazine on an uncomfortable bench while they're waiting and finish the whole fat orgy off with a post-coital fag while they watch black balloons squeeze themselves out of the washer-dryer.

ThreeThousand is a subcultural guide to Melbourne, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Melbourne writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence ThreeThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
