There are two very good reasons why Journal could be Melbourne’s best café; part owner John who is easily the best barrista in Melbourne, and the other part-owner Con, who runs the Supper Club, The European and Degraves culinary cartel. The result is a venue that just nails so many things that make city café culture great. Simple but good food, great service, greater coffee (Grinders) and greatest interior design.
Nestled in the same building as the City Library, Journal is perpetually busy but seldom crowded. Two big communal tables create a great sociable dynamic that occasionally backfires when you get wedged in the middle of a gaggle of beurocratic crones discussing office politics at high volume. If that becomes too much just grab a quiet table, a pumpkin and fetta bruschetta, a glass of red, and think of how much you’d love to have the courage to tell them to shut up.
