On Smith Street it's best to walk really fast between Panama, Cavallero and Wabi Sabi Salon. That's because you may get assaulted by an aggressive man with a meth pipe in his hand. Or even worse, you might enter an ironically generic alternative bar: Hey man, what's your Vibe? Want to listen to some spoken word? Jazz on Sunday afternoons or Salsa Fridays with an RnB DJ afterwards. Jesus Christ where does it end?
Thankfully Smith Street has a new oasis: Collingwood World. Look for the discreet doorway and stair leading up to the left of Yah Yah's (down the Gertrude Street end). Admire the replicated Melway print of the streets of Collingwood, pregnant with working class tales and the rich history of a hundred seedy characters, like the original Collingwood Gangster Squizzy Taylor who has a cocktail named after him at the bar.
The décor inside is understated and pleasantly dark for a street that seems to have a passion for bright purple signage. Take to a booth, grab a bench, enjoy the company of one fellow man or 50 fellow men - you can do it all. There are cocktails that would make Carrie Bradshaw keel over and die (with any luck) so put some hair on your chest with a Gary Coltrane instead of fannying about with a Mojito. What's best though is that this is just the beginning of something good. There's a warehouse out the back which may be converted and a private room on the cards as well.
Good old Collingwood World forever.
