Rarely a meal is served so perfectly prepared, daringly executed, and exactly proportioned that you simply can't remove it from your thoughts. This dish becomes your personal culinary classic, worth traveling vast distances where the dish becomes the destination, not just a bite along the way.
The City Wine Shop's meatballs with rocket and pasta is such a dish; a hearty mound of spicy meatballs dolloped with homemade tomato concasse, fresh dressed rocket and thick shavings of parmesan, perched on a serving of pasta where the meatball:noodle ratio is heavily in favour of the carnivores.
Grappling with brain-numbing traffic for this very meal, trotting eagerly towards the glowing Spring St establishment, nearly tripping over a couple dining al fresco on the way in, bursting gracelessly through the wooden doors, hurrying past the 'wall of wine' to find a place at the bar (for a meal this delicious, I was pleased to suffer the indignity of dining alone) but sure enough, 'Yes, we are giving ze meatballs a rest dis evening". So pork belly, lentils, watercress and apple, matched with a cab merlot it was. Dinner arrived succulent and sticky, each bite a delicious combination of sweet meat and crisp apple. Saving the rich, drippy, crackling-infused lentils to mop with the side serve of bread and forgot about the wine altogether. A true triumph of a dish, as for the meatballs; next time Gadget.
