From morning to midnight and back again, EAT/DRINK is ThreeThousand's guide to cafes, bars and restaurants in Melbourne. We know the best coffee because we drink 20 a day (each), we know the good restaurants because we can't cook, and we'll tell you where to find hidden bars and other places that still let you smoke so that we can ask you for a cigarette when you get there. EAT/DRINK is as voracious as our appetites and a much better filter than our livers, which stopped working a long time ago. Email your EAT/DRINK suggestions to: talk@threethousand.com.au
When I came onto a bucket-load of figs from a friend's garden recently, I promptly ate half of them, let quite a few go rotten, then decided to save the rest by making fig jam. It was really quite enjoyable.
I cut the fruit up into acceptable chunks and threw them in a pot with the same volume of sugar as fruit.
Even though Collins Quarter was destined to be a Friday-night-work-drinks haven, there are a few hours in the morning where it doesn't smell of dry cleaning. You shouldn't have to bust out your dowsing rods to find a secluded hovel to drink coffee and read the morning's news. So while we've covered Collins Quarter in the past, they've been working on their new concept to relieve your mornings of chaos.
Mixed Business is both a café and a convalescent home. You wander in feeling a bit fragile, even wary of spending a hungover Saturday morning in a fledgling café.
But fear not - you are soon taken under the care of a remarkable waitress who somehow combines Greek yiayia, old-school English nurse and hospitality hottie into one soothing package.
See a penny pick it up, all day long you will have good luck. Or you could simply order a serving of French toast and all day long your tummy will be filled and ever so satisfied with its happy start to the day. Or why don’t you have a glass of freshly-squeezed organic juice, safely knowing that not one insect was harmed in its production.
Things you can do on a Sunday morning in Melbourne:
1) Hang out on Flinders Street Station steps wearing black eyeliner, four layers of black clothing, black lipstick, black shoes and a black attitude.
2) Join Collingwood footballers for an early morning tipple on King Street.
3) Watch annihilated tourists stumble into the Vic Hotel after a night out in the big smoke.
Benevolent, daggy yet inherently cool, Julio, like Paul Simon, is indifferent to judging eyes. Fresh jam and custard doughnuts are Julio's trademark product. Gobble one while you tap into the free wireless internet and slurp your Supreme coffee.
Should you feel like something more, the menu offers a delightful mix of items startlingly different from Melbourne's quotidian cafe chow, a ‘Turkish breakfast plate' with tomato, cucumber, fetta and olives sets the tonefor a Moorish themed menu, dominated by salads and fresh produce rather than bread (although the sardine, lemon and harissa toasted sandwich is a ripper).
