Happy tummy = not grumpy.

Batch (or Bach) in New Zealandish means a kind of holiday shack, rustic and familiar. Batch in Carlisle St is like a retreat, inviting an immediate sense of warmth and cosiness, something like finding the perfect doona.

It hits the spot with a no-nonsense approach of bloody good coffee (Coffee Supreme), hearty food and impeccable (your-water-glass-is-never-empty) service. Owner, Jason Chan, brought little snippets and stories from New Zealand (his birth place) to Melbourne, from the wine, the beer and the vodka to the coffee, chocolates and lollies it's a little batch away from batch.

The lunch menu changes every month and dinner changes every week depending on what's fresh. This means you have to go back every week to eat everything on the menu, but don't worry, some of the favourites do stick around longer. What food they can make themselves, they do and everything about Batch feels non-manufactured and honest. So much to eat, so little time.
