You like beer right? A friend once admonished me for drinking beer from the bottle - "you don't drink wine from the bottle do you?"... ahem... His point being, beer should be accorded the same respect, has history, specific characteristics, etc, blah. Anyway. To fully respect your beer, you need to drink it from ultra-thin Usuhari glass, hand blown by some wizened old men in Tokyo.
Event: Exhibition
Stimulus: Japanese culture
Possibly the most polite war in the history of wars is the Atomic war, for the hearts and minds of people who love a particular coffee machine designed in the late '40s by Giordano Robbiati. Weirdly, this international war is happening mostly in Australia, between Sorrentina, Bon, and Otto.
It's remaining polite for a few reasons I think; firstly because of the way people love this machine.
Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable; these men, you just know, had a Gentlemen's Outfitter that they frequented. And now, tucked away in Somerset Place, so do I. Thom Grogan and James Roberts have established a haven for men's men. Men who love suits and shoes and coffee, and soon whiskey, and whisky.
Not so much Brendan Nelson, but Steve McQueen, Uma Thurman, Dennis Hopper, even Carrie Anne Moss - no matter what your particular take on riding a motorcycle, it's more types of cool than you could poke a hipster at.
In pursuit of that vision, you should spend two days with a mixed bag of bogans and mid-life crises feeling scared, awkward and looking like a dick learning to ride at HART.
Pick up an old book and look closely at the page. You'll see not only ink on paper but also an impression of the heavy metal letterforms that laid the ink there. Pages used to be composed by hand, locked up in a chase, inked and then slammed against a piece of paper.
A few years ago, letterpress equipment was being sold off as scrap metal.
Tobias Frere-Jones and his partner Jonathan Hoefler form New York type design studio Hoefler & Frere-Jones, possibly the most well-respected and prolific dedicated type-design studio operating today. Their way of describing the process of type design is enjoyable, accessible and funny - a quality unusual in type designers.
Like the Beatles were to rock ‘n' roll, Alan Moore is to superhero comics. The Pom who blew the lid off, who started it and ended it.
And Watchmen is both the beginning and the end of the superhero genre in comic books. It represents the stillborn renewal and maturing of the genre, as well as calling into question the motivations and proclivities of all previous superhero activity.
