Description:
Although prancing around on a yacht listening to new wave fell out of favour in the '90s (booo!), yacht rock is making a strong, semi-ironic comeback. Think Gucci loafers, white slacks, unbuttoned shirt and the wind in your hair as you spill champagne over the starboard bow. The Serps and the Junior crew know this - they've been watching old episodes of Miami Vice to get up to speed on proper yacht etiquette - and they're hosting their very own soiree.
Event: Party
Stimulus: yacht rock

When:
Friday Oct 2, 9pm
How much:
$13/$16 from here
Description:
The great thing about Fringe Festival is that it allows people to be ‘themselves'. No matter how surreal ‘themselves' might be. What's that? You're a ‘horror clown' with 'glowing thumbs, satanic possessed lantern, vampiric tendencies' and a powerful lust for 'strip tease acrobatics'? Right this way Mr Vladimir The Crow, the audience is waiting.

Description:
The Swedes may seem all innocent like with their pickled fish and Nordic good looks, but don't let that fool you. Underneath their turtle necks and goofy accents are hearts of PURE EVIL intent on world domination. Their preferred weapon? An army of folky indie pop singers. The last couple of years alone we've had Jens Lekman, Lykke Li and Jose Gonzalez win international acclaim and sway public influence.
Event: Bands
Stimulus: Acoustic everything

Afterlife: Official Parklife afterparty with Tiga and Rapture DJs
Where:
Roxanne Parlour, Lvl 3, 2 Coverlid Pl, Melbourne
When:
Sat Oct 3, doors 10pm
How much:
$35 +BF from here
Description:
Parklife Melbourne is officially sold out. If you haven't got tickets sorted then too bad, so sad... That said, you can still catch the tail end of the festival at the official afterparty. While Tiga and The Rapture are confirmed to play records and get hammered behind the turntables (or MP3 players, or whatever), these things always attract a good percentage of the festival acts in a casual ‘just hanging out' capacity.
Event: afterparty
Stimulus: Flying High
What:
Appropriations and Great Super 8
Where:
ACMI, Fed Square, Melbourne
When:
Fri Oct 2, 7pm
How much:
$13 / $10
Description:
What happens when you splice long lost Super 8 footage from experimental '70s films with contemporary weirdness? Honestly, we have absolutely no idea. That's a question that only Appropriations and Great Super 8 can answer. Featuring exerpts from various European movies from the mid '70s, this is like a crash course in art house film.
Event: Film
Stimulus: art house
What:
Endless Bummer: The Art of Barf
Where:
Until Never Gallery, Lvl 2, 3-5 Hosier La, Melbourne
When:
Opening Wed Oct 7, 6-9pm
How much:
Free!
Description:
James Callahan's illustrations look like they belong on an early '90s skate tee. Think brash colours, skeletons, Suicidal Tendencies, Vision Street Wear, Skate or Die on the C64. Since all those things are back in a big way for 2009, an exhibition of his work is crazy timely. It's also crazy gaudy, which is exactly what you'd expect from an artist who goes by ‘Barf'.
Event: Exhibition
Stimulus: Awesome skate action
