When asked to describe the difference between ECSR's Primary Colours and their self-titled debut, guitarist Mikey Young said it was more '82 than '76. With their third album, Rush To Relax, I don't think Mikey would be able to sum up the difference so easily.
Rush To Relax picks up where Primary Colours left off.
HEALTH operate on a visceral plane. There is emotion apparent in their recordings but it is not made clear for you in words. It comes through in sound abstracted, voices affected and tempos flailing. They are able to connect to the audience on a basic level without having to sacrifice their complexities.
Intuition plays a large part in the nature of music. Whether learned on their chosen instrument or approaching it from a new angle, the ability of a group of players to lock into and interweave with each other's sounds is a crucial dynamic. This instinctual nature shines through strongly on Blank Realm's debut vinyl release, Heatless Ark.
Punk is now more than 30 years old, and while that might not be old enough to qualify for the pension, those who were around to see the scene ignite in the '70s are certainly getting close. Yet, as a general rule, it still plays as music for the young. The genre hasn't necessarily aged with its instigators.
Where their EP showcased an off-the-cuff looseness and a near-enough-is-good-enough attitude, Songs' self-titled debut album is a study in (relative) discipline, with thoroughly explored song structures and deftly crafted soundscapes.
These are songs that have been broken down and rebuilt numerous times.
Lightning Bolt are a juggernaut. They are two men. Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson. They play and they play and they play faster and they play faster and they play more and faster and more faster. Limbs, masks, and the floor, and the people crushing in, and Halloween. It's like it's Halloween. And then there's the noise, which is the music, and it hits you and you keep going and they keep going.
